Quails
Sparkly Pharaoh is a color variation of the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), an egg-laying type weighing under 300 g. We developed this line through selective breeding of individuals carrying a gene that enhances black barring. After two years of targeted selection, we stabilized this hidden gene into a distinct line. Hatching eggs of this variety are unavailable.
The Sparkly Pharaoh Japanese quail is characterized by enhancing the feather pattern of the common Japanese Pharaoh quail. It affects the feather pattern more than the base coloration, creating more prominent black barring on the feathers, giving the quail a darker, more dramatic look.
In the Sparkly Pharaoh color variety, the quails become noticeably darker, with barring on every feather. The entire body is covered in black stripes, creating a consistent and striking pattern. This form emphasizes dark tones, giving the bird a more intense appearance.
Sparkly Pharaoh is a popular variety because it enhances the contrast and depth of the original feather pattern, making the quail visually more attractive and unique.
Internationally, this variety is known as Sparkly Pharaoh, which translates to Sparkly Faraón in Slovak. Learn more about the Sparkly gene at Pips n Chicks.
